The cry goes out for Lord Nelson

ADMIRAL Lord Nelsons visit to Milford Haven 200 years ago was commemorated by Town Crier David Rye on Thursday.

Nelson, accompanied by Sir William and Lady Emma Hamilton, stayed in Hamilton Terrace at the New Inn, later renamed the Lord Nelson Hotel. And a banquet was held there on August 1st, 1802, to mark the fourth anniversary of Nelson victory at the Battle of the Nile, where one of his captains was Pembrokeshire-born Thomas Foley.

Nelson had arrived at Milford the previous day, after calling at Narberth and Haverfordwest.

During his five days at Milford Haven, he also attended a regatta, cattle show and fair and inspected the naval dockyard.

Later on his tour, he visited Llanion House; Picton Castle; Haverfordwest, where he received the freedom of the town and county; Ridgeway House, Llawhaden; Stackpole Court; Tenby and Amroth Castle.

David Rye re-created the announcement of Nelsons visit outside the Lord Nelson Hotel.
