County Show bounces back

THE County Show got off to a good start yesterday (Tuesday) and all the signs are that, despite the effects of foot and mouth on exhibit numbers, there will be plenty to see.

A last minute pick-up in trade stand numbers means the showground is full and, although cattle and sheep numbers are slightly down, there is still a wonderful spectacle of prime stock on show and a record entry in the horse classes.

Cattle started to arrive at the showground at the weekend and Monday saw the exhibitors busy washing down and grooming their animals ready for the show ring and the grand parade.

One long-standing exhibitor, Mr George Thorne, of Studdolph Hall, Steynton, has brought 16 of his Herefords to the show, including the female champion at the Royal Welsh.

We are going to have a good show of cattle and sheep, despite the reduction in numbers, said show secretary Barry Vaughan. And we are certainly receiving full media attention this year and our music showcase promises to stage local entertainment talent at its best, said Barry Vaughan.

President Len Thomas, who with his wife Rose and other show officials took the traditional pre-show stage coach trip into Haverfordwest on Monday morning, said: Everyone seems to be glad the show is back and we are looking forward to a good show provided the weather is on our side.
