Churches come in very sandy!

Buckets and spades will be to the fore next week as Wednesday, August 21st, sees the return of the annual St Davids Sand Church contest at Whitesands beach.

In last years contest, the judges were amazed to see 81 churches and religious buildings built to an incredibly high standard. The competition will be judged by the Rev Jonathan Lean, representing St Davids Cathedral; Terry Lucas, of Cadw, and Western Telegraph reporter Steve Adams.

Prizes of £25 will be awarded for each of the four group winners. Two prizes have been supplied by the St Davids Peninsular Tourist Association and two by the Western Telegraph. The categories, as before, will be: Families, groups, disabled, and children under seven.

There is no entry fee and teams can turn up at the beach on the day to take part - with each group being allocated 15 square feet of sand from which to build their structure.

The tides this year mean the competition will begin at 11 am, with judging taking place at 3.30 pm.
