Contestants in-spire-d by sand churches

35News Sandchurch contest

Glorious sunshine and perfect conditions welcomed more than 60 entrants to the Western Telegraph sponsored 13th annual sandchurch building competition at Whitesands Beach, St Davids, last week. The standard of entries once again astounded the judges and everyone on the packed beach was keen to voice an opinion on who should be the eventual winners.

No entries in the disabled category meant two equal first prizes could be awarded in the families section, making the task of the judges slightly easier - but not by much.

After much consultation the final decisions were reached with six-year-old Molly Hawthorne, from Mid-Wales, being the deserving winner of the under-sevens category while Tom and Ben Parry, Sebastian Pierce and Josh Rogers, of St Davids Lifeguards, won the Club or Organisation section.

The Family section, with an incredible 50 plus entries, was undoubtedly the hardest to judge but the two first prizes were eventually awarded to the gothic masterpiece created by the Etcheverria family, of Milford Haven, and the Usborne family and friends, of Sheffield, for their entry - inspired by the landscape around Borth.

Organisers, The St Davids Peninsula Tourist Association thanked everyone who entered for making a great day out for all concerned.
