Beaches are best in the country

Pembrokeshire has the best beaches in the country, a county councillor has claimed following an Environment Agency report last week on standards of cleanliness at Welsh seaside resorts.

Of 75 beaches surveyed, all 20 of the Pembrokeshire beaches included were classed as very good, good or fair. None was graded as poor. Seven beaches across the country were classed as very good, with four of those -Broad Haven, Broadhaven South, Newport North and Whitesands - being in Pembrokeshire. Another 13 beaches were rated as good and the remaining three classed as fair.

Councillor Brian Hall, who has responsibility for the environment, said: It simply isnt enough to have nice sandy beaches. In Tenby and Saundersfoot, we have up to three daily refuse collections and litter is cleared from our beaches on a daily basis.

Pembrokeshire is a nice county and I would say we have the best beaches in the country, but we are always looking for improvement. Councillor Brian Howells, cabinet member for leisure and sports, said: We are delighted with the Environment Agencys report. It shows we are committed to providing top quality, clean beaches for locals and visitors to the county.
