Sutton stars as Lamphey lose out

Daniel Sutton scored a superb unbeaten century as Lamphey tried to claw their way from relegation but neighbours Pembroke battled their way to a high-scoring draw as Lamphey skipper Hywel Gibbs used all ten bowlers at his disposal in a vain attempt at winkling Pembroke out.

In the final analysis it mattered little, however, because Llangwm won their local derby against Hook so relegation was already inevitable for last seasons league champions.

Sutton has really developed his stroke play under the watchful eye of Dave Lovell, who was unable to play because of injury, and he arrived at the crease with Peter Hall having been bowled by Nigel Phillips for nine runs.

He received support from Gareth Lewis and Mark Yea until both also fell to Phillips off-spin, with skipper Gibbs also chipping in with 15 before he was bowled by Kevin Jenkins - but Sutton was always in control as he hit four big sixes and stroked 11 boundaries.

His century came from only 86 balls and he was unbeaten on 117 from only 92 deliveries when the Lamphey innings closed on 202 for 5.

Pembroke also lost an early wicket as Paul White was well caught by Martin Lewis off Peter Hall but gritty knocks from Barry Evans, Hugh Davies and Matthew Mitchell meant that although Pembroke were behind the clock they were denying Lamphey the much-sought early break-throughs.

Phil Hay added 18 and Mark Fraser returned to something like his best form as he scored an undefeated 48 against some of Lampheys more occasional bowlers.

Skipper Gwyn Griffiths joined him at the close and although Pembroke were by then only 14 runs short of their target they were never really likely to snatch a win as Lamphey held onto control - but still make the dreaded drop after a real battle over recent weeks.
