Carew clincher all in vain

Carew gained 29 points from their easy home win against Lawrenny but Darren Thomass team was unable to complete the league and Bowl double as news of Haverfordwests win a mile up the road filtered through - and The Villagers had to settle for second spot in the knowledge that they had played two fewer games than their rivals.

It was Thomas who led by example, as he has done all season, by taking five of the first six wickets for Carew in a 12-over stint that conceded only 31 runs.

hris Vincent top-scored with a typically stylish 40 and received assistance from Andrew Cole (junior), Christian Phillips and Steve Lewis before Chris Williams marked a welcome return to first team action with a late 13 not out.

But with Simon Wood supporting Thomas with 3 for 29 and with a wicket apiece from Rob Scourfield and Steve Ive, Carew were satisfied at having dismissed their neighbours for less than 150.

Carew openers Ian Sefton and Nick Scourfield are the most consistent pairing in the county and this match was no exception as they put on 103 runs for the first wicket, taking their singles well and despatching the bad ball to tthe boundary.

It looked as if they might both carry their bats but Sefton finally departed to a superb catch by Andrew Cole (junior) at deep mid-wicket off the spin bowling of Ian Jenkins, his fine 58 including eight fours and a six. Scourfield continued to his deserved unbeaten half century and Simon Wood rounded off a good first season at the club with five fours in his 30 not out as Carew reached their target in 36 overs - but still had to settle for a disappointing second place in the table.
