Classic rally is all smiles per gallon

GLORIOUS SUNSHINE saw the biggest ever turnout for the fifth annual Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Rally for Classic Cars on Sunday from Milford Marina to Tenby.

An incredible 230 vehicles reached the finish post at Tenby, with a 1925 Morris Bullnose and a 1927 Ford Model T lining up alongside over 50 MGs of all ages and models, numerous Morris Minors, a Porsche 944 and a Ford Capri - not too mention Cadillacs, Beach Buggies, and anything else on two, three or four wheels.

From the moment Western Telegraph editor Fiona Phillips lowered the Pembrokeshire flag to signal the start of the rally, drivers from across the country, and even one from Germany, streamed away - including representatives from the Milford Haven Vintage and Classic Car Club; Pembrokeshire Classic Car Club; Neyland Classic Car Club; South Wales Kit Car Club; Pembrokeshire MG Car Club and Clwyd Practical Classic Car Club.

Event organiser Jeff Edwards was overwhelmed by the turnout. Jeff said: I knew it would be reasonably successful, but nothing in this world could have prepared me for anything like this.

BBC Wales presenter Jane Harvey travelled with Mike and Val George in a 1946 Alvis TA14 convertible, while Lord Parry of Neyland joined Mike and Kath Breen in a 1949 Alvis TA14 saloon.

The run finished at a packed Tudor Square in Tenby, where spectators and motorists alike congratulated everyone who finished.

The mood of the day was perfectly summed up by Chas from Llangwm in his Cadillac Fleetwood when he said: Its not about the number of miles per gallon but the number of smiles per gallon.
