Show secretary retires

Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society is looking for a new secretary. Mr Barry Vaughan, who has held the post for nearly five years, has indicated his intention to retire and the Society's staffing committee met on Thursday to put the machinery in motion to replace him.

Mr Vaughan was appointed in October 1997 after a career in the NHS and private hospital management in the UK and overseas.

After leaving Haverfordwest Grammar School, he began studies at Manchester University in 1968 before embarking on his health service career at Cardiff Royal Infirmary, Cefncoed Hospital, Swansea, and then the County Hospital, Haverfordwest. From there he commissioned the new Withybush Hospital, Haverfordwest, before its official opening by the Princess Royal.

Leaving the NHS in 1989, he worked for some years in the hospital service in Saudi Arabia and finally in a private hospital in Peterborough. He succeeded Mr Don Evans as show secretary and had three successful shows until the foot and mouth hiatus last year. Now, following this year's successful come-back show, he will retire when his contract ends in November.

Said Mr Vaughan: "Although it has had its ups and downs it has been a positive experience being show secretary and the success of this year's show, with so many changes coming into fruition, means I will go out on a high note. The job has changed in five years and I am proud of the 2002 show, which was undoubtedly the best of my four shows."

Mr Vaughan said he would now be able to spend more time with his family and continue his soccer interests.
