Vital by-pass welcomed

NATIONAL Assembly Minister for Environment Sue Essex unveiled a plaque to mark the opening of the £6.4 million A477 Sageston-Redberth by-pass on Wednesday.

Welcoming the Assembly-funded by-pass, Ms Essex said: "This road will make life bearable for those who live in the communities alongside it. I hope the people of Sageston, Redberth and Milton think that this is money well spent.

"The new road is also an important piece in the jigsaw on this strategic route to Pembroke Dock."

The road has been designed in an environmentally friendly way. Thin surfacing, which produces less tyre noise than more conventional materials, has been used and measures have been taken to protect the habitats of bats, badgers and otters in the area.

The road, which is just under four miles long, has been constructed by Nuttal. It was designed by Arup, along with the Assembly's transport directorate and its agents Hyder Consulting.

Pembrokeshire county councillor Brian Hall, cabinet member for environment and transportation, said: "The county council has long maintained that better road and rail links are vital for the future prosperity of Pembrokeshire. We are now hoping the Fingerpost to Bangeston stretch of road a few miles outside of Pembroke Dock will receive similar treatment. This section desperately requires upgrading."
