Pembroke Dock quins 17 Cwmgors 18
Cwmgors have recruited heavily during the close season and are strongly fancied to take the section by storm after easy wins over Tycroes and New Dock Stars - but came within a whisker of losing to a determined Pembroke Dock Harlequins' side which clawed its way back from a disappointing 18-3 half time deficit.
Indeed, a measure of the Quins' progress can be gauged from the fact that coach Lennie Scourfield was dissatisfied with the first-half tackling and whatever he said at half time certainly paid dividends because his players scored two superb tries and came close to snatching the decision as pacy young winger Lee Scourfield kicked ahead and appeared to be winning the race for the late touch-down, only to be the victim of a little shirt-tugging which the referee missed.
Lee Rogers gave the Quins an early lead with a penalty but straight from the kick off the Quins allowed strong-running centre Phil Sparrow to race through without a hand being laid upon him, centre Kevin Windsor converting.
Cwmgors added a second try as winger Andrew Davies chipped ahead and won the race for the touch-down despite protests from the Quins' supporters nearby that Lee Scourfield had gained the first touch on the ball - and although Windsor missed the conversion attempt he made amends with two penalties as the Quins found it hard going.
But the second half saw the homesters raise the tempo several notches as Lee Scourfield scored a cracking try after quick hands by Darren Gibby and Gareth Clarke, with Lee Rogers supplying the conversion.
The Quins had to wait for their second try until close to the end when Lance Tallett, Richard McIntyre, Gareth Scourfield and Phil Hughes set up the position for their backs to be brought into action and winger Gareth 'Frontera' Lewis sped over for a try which Rogers again gaoled.
There was still enough time for winger Scourfield to be denied at the finish - and Cwmgors left Bierspool knowing that they had come within a whisker of a first defeat of the campaign.
Pembroke Dock Quins: Roy Davies: Gareth Lewis; Darren Gibby; Gareth Clarke; Lee Scourfield: Lee Rogers; Adrian Heath (Steve Davies): Ian Osborne; Gary Burns; Richard McIntyre: Mark Lay; Anthony Lay (Brendan O'Driscoll): Gareth Scourfield; Lance Tallett; Phil Hughes.
