Neyland writer tipped for top TV ratings

With a high-budget television adaptation of her work coinciding with a Booker Prize nomination, Neyland-born author, Sarah Waters, has become one of the hottest names in the literary world.

A BBC adaptation of her last novel, Tipping the Velvet, has received massive publicity - not least for its exploration of lesbianism in the repressive surroundings of the late 19th century.

Forbidden love and lust in Victorian England is also a central theme of Sarah's latest novel, Fingersmith, which is in the running for literature's most prestigious award, the Booker Prize.

Sarah's parents live in Neyland and her father, Ronald, said both he and Sarah's mother, Mary, were thrilled with everything that was happening. He said: "She's given us a great deal of pleasure and we're delighted for her."

Sarah is still very close to her parents and stayed with them last week while attending a reading in Newport.

Tipping the Velvet starts at 9 pm on Wednesday on BBC 2. The Booker Prize will be awarded on October 22nd.
