Parents in battle to save village school

Parents and children staged a protest last week to try and save Llanddowror School, which is set to close at the end of the academic year. Villagers armed with placards waited to defend the 300 year old school as county council education chiefs arrived for a consultation meeting.

School governors condemned the meeting. "Consultation is something you do to reach a decision, but they have already made up their minds." claimed governor David Howells.

The school has 19 pupils of various ages catered for by three staff. Although the school is said to lack 'modern facilities' it seems that parents think sending their children to a small Welsh school is of greater benefit to them, explained Mr Howells.

The county council stressed its commitment to the consultation process. Head of policy and finance, Robert Blewitt said "We want to talk to local communities before any decisions are made on the future of their schools."

Llanddowror's first school was founded by famous preacher, Griffiths Jones in the early 1700s.
