It's a jungle out there!

Pembrokeshire County Council is on the trail of a monkey.

There have been several reports in the last couple of days of sightings of a primate in the north of the county. It is said to be brownish in colour and about the size of a small dog.

The council has sent its animal welfare team to an area near Brawdy where they have set up a humane trap, baited with fruit.

Nigel Watts, a principal officer in public protection, said the aim was to capture the animal alive, without harming it.

Some types of monkey have to be licensed under the Dangerous Wild Animals Act. The council has issued licences to a number of zoos in the area, none of which has lost any animals.

Mr Watts, who has sought the advice of a wildlife expert, said: "We are asking anyone who sights the monkey not to approach it, but to call our animal welfare team on (01437 764551, or the police.

"It is possible that it may have been kept illegally as a pet and either been set free or escaped."

Mystery still surroundings the sighting of large cats in the North Pembrokeshire area. Over the past few years there have been several sightings and one has been dubbed the 'beast of Boncath'.
