Goodwick ease through to next round

Goodwick United 3 Carew 1

Goodwick United eased their way into the next round of the Senior Cup after a convincing win against a Carew side missing a few key players. Nevertheless, the home team's performance was confident and assured and manager Sean O'Connor was well pleased with the result.

"We were comfortable and in control. There was no real danger in us losing, we looked more settled than in recent weeks and we're into the next round which is the main thing."

Goodwick quickly took the lead in the first half when the pressure created from their midfield dominance told. From a move down the right, John Bailey delivered a neat cross and Steve Summers made no mistake in slamming the ball home.

Against the run of play, Carew quickly levelled matters when they were awarded a free-kick and Nick Shelmerdine powered the ball through the wall past the diving Darren Turner for a great goal.

However, being level didn't last long as Rob Hughes and Summers perplexed the visiting defence with a nice one-two and Hughes slipped the ball passed Ian Kerrison for a good goal.

After the break and Goodwick's dominance continued. Two-one quickly became 3-1 when Barry Hayes headed in a John Bailey cross and it could have quite easily have been 4-1 but Summers shot wide and Bailey's shot was well saved.
