No 'theme pub' bid for Shire Hall

The national pub chain JD Wetherspoon has denied it is interested in buying the Shire Hall.

Valued at over £100,000, the building was last week declared surplus to requirements by the Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet, which is seeking a buyer.

There have been strong rumours that the company may convert the imposing Shire Hall into a theme pub.

But Greg Maycock, of Van Der Berg, the property acquisition company employed by JD Wetherspoon, said that the company was 'not making moves' to buy the Shire Hall.

"As far as that building is concerned, it's not happening. However we are looking at other sites in the town," he said.

A spokesman for Haverfordwest Civic Society commented: "A theme pub in the Shire Hall would be a tragedy. We hope it is not too late to save the building and that the people of the county will rally to demonstrate to the council how deeply they disapprove of its undemocratic and insensitive decision."
