Bedwas 60 Narberth 25
Bedwas leap-frogged over Narberth with a big win at a Bridge Field which was in good condition despite the heavy overnight rain.
The homesters grabbed seven tries as they generally looked much sharper than The Otters and No 8 Deri Mattravers was always in the thick of things as he joined centre Nathan Hill in claiming a brace of tries.
Narberth started out early for the 11.30 am start and were changed from the previous week's winning side as Martin Davies came in at full back, Adrian Killa started at scrum half, Simon Delaney was given the hooker's role and Matthew Evans reclaimed his place as open-side flanker - but although outside half Gareth James gave Narberth the early lead with a neat dropped goal they were soon 7-3 adrift as Mattravers went over from close range and ace kicker Andrew James landed the extra points.
Good work by Jamie Bohata, Gareth Bennett and Alan Phillips earned Narberth a solid platform from which Gareth James kicked a penalty - but they were rocked back as winger Steffan Santela raced over for a try and James converted before also landing a penalty as reward for good work by Mattravers and Co up front.
Hill and Santela combined to set up Mattravers' second try and although James missed the conversion he made amends with another penalty to make the interval score 25-6 in the home side's favour.
Things went from bad to worse after the break as Nathan Hill sliced through for a try, converted by James, after only two minutes of the second period, with a Nick Jones misfield allowing Santela to show his paces with a good pick up and run to the line for James' conversion to put Bedwas 39-6 ahead.
Jonathan Tilley also grabbed a converted try for Bedwas before he was replaced by Alan Beynon before several changes made by coach Keith Eaton revived Narberth fortunes enough for them to claim their first try when Elgan Vittle and Martin Davies set up the chance for winger Nick Jones to speed through from 20 metres, Gareth James adding the extras. Jones showed just why he is one of the top try-scorers in the section as he popped up on the other wing to claim his second try.
Bedwas responded with a Lee Pierce try which James inevitably converted - and although Martin Davies had to be replaced after a nasty head wound The Otters scored straight away when winger Daniel Gravell sprinted clear from 50 metres out and James converted.
But Bedwas had the final word as Nathan Hill jinked over for his second try and James converted to give his team a big win - and leave Narberth needing to regroup before they face another difficult task this Saturday as they travel to face Beddau!
