Borderers bomb to heavy away defeat

Tondu 44 Whitland 3

Whitland travelled to Tondu with high hopes of defeating a team seven places lower than The Borderers in the table - but once again results were turned upon their heads in this oh-so-tough section as Tondu raced in for five tries without response from Whitland, who had to settle for a three points from new fly half Scott Penney as they suffered their heaviest defeat of the season!

There was little evidence of the points to come in the first quarter as the teams sounded each other out and Tondu led 6-3 through a penalty either side of Penney's effort by outside half Mark Jones, who kicked superbly throughout and was involved in all that Tondu did.

Jones also landed the conversion of Tondu's first try after he had deftly chipped through and full back Lee Byrne won the race for the line to touch down.

The Whitland faithful were less than impressed with referee Lyn Davies (Porth), and Tondu scored another try as prop Kevin Sadd ploughed over for Jones to add the extras.

Fellow prop Hywel Davies got his name on the scoresheet shortly afterwards from a catch and drive at a lineout close to the line, Jones inevitably converting to put his side 27-3 to the good at the break.

Whitland have traditionally played well in the second period but they were rocked back in the very first minute as winger Darryl Thomas raced through and Jones converted before slotting a penalty to further extend the gap between the sides.

Winger Thomas added another try as reward for further forward pressure and with Jones taking a well-earned break it was left to Gavin Simpson to apply the coup de grace for Tondu with the conversion that gave his side victory by 41 points.
