Vikings ease their way through

Hakin United 5 Goodwick united 0

Hakin continued their quest for another West Wales cup final appearance with a convincing scoreline and a contender for goal of the season, if not a convincing performance, over Division One rivals Goodwick.

The visitors opened the scoring on 13 minutes when a Leighton Edwards free kick from the right ended in a goal-mouth scramble and the unmarked Mike Cooper was able to drive home.

The goal was the only highlight of a drab first half of hard tackling and misplaced passes on a bobbling pitch in cold conditions littered with yellow cards and free kicks.

Goodwick's one good chance of the half, if not the game, came when a good move down the left lead to a driven low across evading both keeper and defenders but without an attacker within twenty yards.

Despite looking the stronger, Hakin failed to capitalise further and it was not until a good move down the left flank late in the half that they really started to show their potential.

Nigel Armstrong doubled the lead with a powerful header from 12 yards into the bottom corner as he charged into the box following a poor clearance.

The moment of the game came on 28 minutes when good work down the right hand side found Hakin four on four with a back pedalling Goodwick defence.

A good ball was flicked into the middle, but momentum seemed to be lost and the danger cleared.

The loose clearance came down on 30 yards and was met by Marc Devonald, he struck it first time and ripped it into the far corner beyond the outstretched Goodwick keeper Darren Turner.

The game was as good as over before Paul Jones nodded a right wing cross into the path of Leighton Edwards who was able to coolly pick his spot beyond the keeper in the 41st minute.

Three minutes later Goodwick hopes were totally sunk when Turner hit a clearance straight into the back of unmarked Edwards on the edge of the area.

Edwards turned quickly and smashed the ball passed the flapping and humiliated keeper who lay face down in the mud in despair.

Hakin may have marched into the fourth round and maybe hoping for a home fixture, something of a rarity in the recent campaigns, but, if they really want to go beyond the heights of last year's lost final they will have to play far better than this against some of their likely future visitors.
