Two weeks after completing a first aid course, Jacqui Bruce, of Johnston, saved the life of her disabled daughter.
Over the last few months, Graham Williams, NCH Cymru emergency instructor, has been training people in of first aid at the NCH Children's Centre.
For Jacqui, one of his students, it proved a lifesaver. Her 11-year-old daughter Toni was eating a piece of meat when it lodged in her throat. Thanks to the lessons and advice given by paramedic Graham she knew exactly what to do.
She calmly performed the Haemlich manoeuvre, dislodging the meat, and almost certainly saving Toni's life.
Jacqui later commented: "It was all thanks to the first aid course and Graham."
The courses, funded by the European Social Fund, are proving very popular. They are free and open to anyone whose name is on the register of children with specific needs. So far groups of parents have received training on moving and handling, wills and trusts and dealing with challenging behaviour, in addition to the first aid courses.
More are planned for later this year. To register your child and obtain more information call the NCH Children's Centre on (01437) 764569.
