A church, which came to signify the close bond between the Germany Army and the people of South Pembrokeshire, could form the centrepiece of a proposed heritage trail.
The parish church at Warren was used extensively before the departure of the Federal German Army from Castlemartin Range. The Panzers donated thousands of pounds to re-slate its ageing roof.
Although it is still used for services, a more prominent role is being sought for the church by its supporters.
Under plans unveiled this week by the Warren Church consultative committee, it would be a major focus of a trail linking important heritage sites in south- west Pembrokeshire. The plan has the support of the Bishop and Dean of St Davids.
Hugh Morgan, a member of the consultative committee, believes it would enhance the appeal of the area to visitors.
"South-west Pembrokeshire is blessed with a rich heritage, which deserves to be better known and enjoyed by a wider public,'' said Mr Morgan, who lives at Rhoscrowther. "To promote this for general benefit, thought is being given to the possible creation of a heritage trail. The degree of support already received does highlight the importance of the initiative.''
The trail would begin at Monkton Priory following a circuit known as the 'all saints' route to Lamphey.
"Quite how far the trail should extend, what it is to embrace and how it is to be organised is a matter which requires discussion with input from a wider range of interests,'' said Hugh Morgan. "It is essential to pick up ideas and sound out feelings on a number of issues if the project is to proceed.''
As evidence of the support the church still enjoys from the military, the first meeting to discuss the plans was held last week.
