St Davids flies flags for world peace

The city of St Davids is set to become an 'ambassador' for peace in Britain.

Colourful peace flags could soon festoon the city centre, linking it with major European capitals.

The rainbow flags, with their white inscriptions of PEACE, have a clear anti-war message.

They have been introduced into Pembrokeshire by St David's photographers Greg Buick and Kirstin Rodland.

Greg explained: "We were in Venice for the Carnival and I could not get over the fact that there were peace flags everywhere - on the town hall, hotels, historic buildings, gondolas going down the canals. It amazing.

"There is a wave of peace flags currently washing over Europe and hanging from almost every other window in Rome, Berlin and Paris."

"As an ancient place of pilgrimage, prayer and natural tranquility, we want to make St Davids the City of Peace in Britain," added Greg, who had 500 flags flown over.

"We would like to decorate our city with peace flags to symbolise our desire for peace and as a sign of solidarity to those who will suffer from war."

The project has the backing of the Dean of St Davids, the Very Reverend J. Wyn Rees.

The flags cost £5 each and any profit will go to the politically independent human rights organisation Amnesty International.

The flags can be obtained on the website www.peaceflags.co.uk.
