Food to be destroyed after lorry overturns

TONS of food bound for a local supermarket will have to be destroyed after an articulated lorry overturned on the A477 road at Sageston on Friday morning.

The lorry, bound for the Pembroke Dock branch of Lidl, tipped over by the roundabout at around 6am, resulting in over seven hours of traffic disruption.

Pembrokeshire County Council staff operated diversions from Carew in the west to St Clears in the east, with traffic using the A40 via Haverfordwest. All four lanes of the Cleddau Bridge were kept open to cope with the heavier volume of traffic.

At the scene of the accident, over 18 tons of foodstuffs had to be removed from the road and the vehicle, before a crane was brought in to right the lorry. The driver escaped unhurt.

Pembrokeshire County Council press officer Len Mullins said: "We have taken the food into storage pending an inspection by insurance assessors, and it will then be destroyed."
