Sea Smart signals safer seaside

EVERY YEAR thousands of people head for the coast as the temperature rises. And every year the Coastguard deals with hundreds of accidents, many of which could be avoided if people took a few simple precautions. To promote safety at the seaside this summer, the Maritime and Coastguard Agency is launching the Sea Smart Campaign, designed to make people aware of the dangers they could encounter at the beach and offering advice on how to avoid any mishaps.

Sea Smart leaflets - which will be available from a variety of outlets - feature a safety code to follow when visiting the coast.

Wristbands for children will also be available at many beaches. Parents will be able to write a contact number on the wristbands, making it much easier for them to be tracked down if their child wanders off. There's lots of fun to be had on holiday at the beach, but don't forget the dangers.

For more information on the Sea Smart Campaign visit the website at www.mcga.gov.uk/seasmart When at the beach: Keep an eye on the weather and watch out for the tides. Keep clear of cliff edges. Always tie inflatables to the shore. Keep children within reach at all times. When at sea: Plan your trip carefully and leave details with friends on shore. Triple check the weather, safety equipment and your boat. Carry spare fuel or a paddle. Sail within your limits and ability.
