Narberth push Town close

Narberth (191 for 8) drew with Haverfordwest (120 for 9) Umpires: Bob Flute and Martin Harries Scorers: Idwal Vincent and Jayne Cole

A splendid century by Marc Hughes took Narberth to the brink of a surprise win against Haverfordwest but his side were denied the success they deserved as Phil Kirkby continued his smashing start to the season as he followed the previous week's unbeaten 62 with an equally impressive 82 not out as his colleagues fumbled their way back to the changing rooms at regular intervals.

Yet Narberth hardly seemed likely to score such a commanding total as they lurched to 7 for 3 against Paul Thomas and Simon Williams.

Then Hughes took centre stage and he crashed seven big sixes among 11 fours before he finally departed for his best-ever score of 124 when he became Paul Thomas's third victim in a good 3 for 18 haul.

Such was Hughes' domination of events that Mr Extras was the next top scorer as Danny James and Gary Hughes added some late runs with some lusty blows.

Haverfordwest made a stumbling start as opener Dai Davies was run out by an excellent piece of fielding by Richard Howell, who also claimed the key wicket of Jonathan Twigg.

Richard James and Paul Thomas soon departed and it was left to Kirkby, with six fours and two sixes, to save the day.

Adrian Griffiths was dismissed from the final ball of the match but with Clive Tucker still in the hutch The Town managed to escape a defeat, while Narberth will take a lot of confidence from this excellent performance.
