Juniors' pride at charity cycle success

From tiny tots to teenagers, they took to their bikes on Bank Holiday Monday to raise money for the British Heart Foundation.

In glorious sunshine, 132 children took part in the Junior Bike Ride at Withybush Show-ground.

They included teams of Brownies and Guides, youth clubs and other groups as well as individuals.

For some it was a personal achievement. Taking part in his first bike ride, for example, was two-year-old Miles Simcox, while William Coney, aged five, couldn't contain his pride at completing the ride for the first time with no stabilisers on his bike.

The event was started by Councillor Bill Philpin, chairman of the Haverfordwest branch of the British Heart Foundation, and Mr Tom Thomas, Narberth, branch chairman.

As children cycled round the course and took part in skills tests, parents made the most of the sunshine and everyone enjoyed picnics.

Winners of the skills tests, organised by Pembrokeshire County Council, were Carl Hughes, aged ten, and Anna Saunders, aged nine, whose prizes were cycling safety helmets.

Once sponsorship has been collected, awards will go to the individual cyclist and team who raised the most money. Said organiser Julie George: "The weather was fantastic and everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and raised money for a very worthwhile cause."
