Mum soldiers get Gulf call up

Two Pembrokeshire mums will soon be waving a soldier's farewell to their husbands and three children as they join troops in the Gulf.

Territorial Army members Furgie Beynon, of New Hedges, Tenby, and Tracy Dyson, of Hill Street, Pembroke Dock, are both drivers with the Royal Logistics Corps.

They are among many members of the 224 (Pembroke Yeomanry) Transport Squadron, 157 Wales and Midlands Logistic Support Regiment who have been called up to take part in the reconstruction and rehabilitation work in the war zone, and leave Britain at the end of this month for the challenge ahead which could take up to six months.

"It will be a huge wrench to go, but this is an amazing opportunity and something I've been trained to do," said 35-year-old Furgie.

"I've taken a lot out of the TA since I joined seven years ago - now this is my chance to put something back in to the best of my ability," Furgie is married to Shane and her children are Emma, aged 12, Dean, aged ten, and three-year-old Chloe.

Tracy, aged 32, whose husband Paul is a Pembroke Dock firefighter, has three boys -Christopher, aged ten, Alex, seven, and Jack, four.

Alongside her family life, she is also a second-year student at Trinity College, Carmarthen where she is working for a BA in archeology.

"I've been in the TA for five-and-a-half years and joined because I've always enjoyed a challenge, as well as being desperate to drive trucks!' she admitted.

"I've been expecting my call-up papers, and now they have come I'm very excited. It's the chance of a lifetime."
