Solly the owl takes to life in the wild

The eagle owl that made a flying visit to Market Street, Haverfordwest, last week spent most of the weekend playing hide and seek with his owners. The bird had made a 50-mile journey to Pembrokeshire from his home, Trimsaran near Llanelli where he was the family pet of Dave and Yvonne Lowes-Bird.

The eagle owl, whose name is Solly (short for Solomon) went missing on a windy night about two months ago.

Dave said: "We've been tracking him ever since but we're always one day behind."

The owl was first spotted by Major John Warren, who lives at Dreen Hill near Haverfordwest. He tracked down Dave and Yvonne by looking them up on a register of people who keep birds of prey.

Solomon was next seen in Dale and then Haverfordwest where he's been for about two weeks.

Dave said: "There have been a lot of sightings of him but we weren't sure until we saw his picture in the paper."

Solomon is used to noise and people because his aviary is at a quad biking and paintballing centre run by Dave and Yvonne's son.

"We've got two other eagle owls and eventually we would like to breed them," said Yvonne.

But Solomon seemed none too keen go home despite efforts to tempt him down from the former Tom's Sports shop in Market Street using dead chicks.

He had already had his dinner, in the shape of a pigeon and seemed determined to continue his life in the wild.

Dave and Yvonne are desperate to get their pet back and have offered a £200 reward for his safe return. Pictured is Valerie Gau from the Pembrokeshire Spastic Charity shop with the reward poster. Picture: Western Telegraph (WTNO789V03).
