Woman wins battle for asbestos payout

After a five-year legal battle, a St Davids woman has received compensation for her husband's death.

Paul Martin, a father of two, died in 1998 aged 59. Between 1961 and 1978 he had been exposed to asbestos while working as an electrician at MoD bases in Brawdy and Trecwn. The Government departments and private contractors Mr Martin worked for had not given him respiratory protection or warned him of the dangers of asbestos.

His widow, 61-year-old Christine Martin, received an undisclosed six-figure payment hours before her case was due to be heard at Cardiff County Court last week.

"Paul was such a kind and caring man," said Mrs Martin. "The money will help but it won't bring him back. He's lost seeing his granddaughter and the retirement we'd hoped for."

The family's Cardiff-based solicitor said the settlement was testament to Mrs Martin's tenacity in her long-running battle for compensation.
