Council's philistine attitude to county's cultural heritage

DEAR EDITOR, - It is now some months since it was announced that the fate of the Shire Hall was in doubt.

Several cogent letters have appeared in your pages in support of a more responsible attitude towards this fundamentally important building by Pembrokeshire County Council. The authority claims to have explored and examined all possibilities for viable use of the Shire Hall. The adequacy and indeed competence of this study seems in doubt and in any case has not been sufficiently aired in public.

The county council seems unaware of, or wishes to ignore, its duties in regard to the cultural health of the county. The present plight of the County Museum is a shameful example. While the council's handling of the colour scheme for the town's main streets has brought ridicule upon itself from all quarters.

The Shire Hall is one of the most important buildings in the county. It is incumbent on the council to ensure it is properly preserved and utilised - for the people of Pembrokeshire. The council should reverse its philistine and neglectful attitude to the cultural heritage of Pembrokeshire and remain the custodian of this handsome building. ROBERT A. KENNEDY
