Prize-winning herd up for sale

After almost 40 years in milk production, John and Sally Hart are dispersing their Hilhoath herd of pedigree Jersey and Guernsey milkers. They are privately selling all but ten of their milking herd and the tanker will be collecting from their farm for the last time on June 24th.

The prize-winning herd, established in 1964, was built up to 70 cows, plus followers.

Since relocating 16 years ago to Buckette Farm at Letterston, greater emphasis has been placed on the Jersey milkers.

The couple's daughter, Claire, said the Jerseys can claim longevity with sound feet and udders which are well suited to their year-round calving, loose housed system.

Thirty-five of the milkers are home-bred and one 13-year-old cow has already produced 12 calves.

In the show ring, the Harts have achieved remarkable success, winning championships at the Welsh Dairy and Pembrokeshire County shows with both breeds, plus numerous cow progeny and inter-breed awards. They became fully organic in 2001.

The Harts are still keeping their options open and, from the milkers that will remain, are considering the possibility of providing a regular supply of fresh, natural Jersey cream to local hotels, guest houses, confectioners and retail outlets.
