Nightmare rail network

Dear Editor, - Your report, Pensioner's Nightmare Train Journey Ends In Tears (June 25th), epitomises the ludicrous situation that exists in the shambolic railway network. Each responsible faction admits only part liability and blames another one for the mess that the unfortunate pensioner found herself in.

Themain problem was caused by the inept way the Conservative government managed the privatisation of the public service. But our current administration disappoints yet again for its lack of moral fibre and conviction in its socialist principles. John Prescott quickly abandoned his role as co-ordinator of the national transport systemwhen he finally realised the magnitude of the task.

Withdrawing the odd franchise, as has been done with Connex, will not be enough. Is it any wonder that road improvements are quickly neutralised by increases in traffic, caused by people who cannot afford the cost and unreliability of rail travel.
