If elected, what will you try to do about the following local issues: Attracting new jobs?
Pembrokeshire needs 1,700 new jobs to bring our employment level to the Wales and UK averages. If the Bluestone can achieve its promised 600 jobs, without damage to other employment, it will make a welcome and significant contribution. However, investment in Bluestone jobs would be about £73,000 each, of which the taxpayer will contribute £24,000 grants. Let us hope it's less of a gamble than the call centre. We must also encourage entreprenership and business start-ups. The local health service?
We are committed to a massive investment and new primary dental care units. Education and schools: Future commitments include reducing primary classes to 25 or less and introducing Baccalaureate-style courses, and resisting university top-up fees. Farming?
The priority is to complete outstanding subsidy payments due to local farmers, get the best possible deal from CAP negotiations; seek special help for 'less favoured areas'; encourage the Welsh agri-food industry and the marketing of Welsh produce; take rigorous measures to protect animal health. War with Iraq?
Good riddance to Saddam Hussein. It certainly couldn't have been achieved without war. But unless a workable democracy can be established and unless Palestinians get justice the world will be even more unstable state. Road and Rail?
Support A40 dualling to Haverfordwest; a shuttle train service from Goodwick to Clarbeston Road so North Pembrokeshire passengers have easier access to Carmarthen and Swansea; rural community transport for shopping and evening journeys. What sums up your constituency's challenge?
Top of my list for political reforms are to decentralise the county council and organise services on a local area basis, and bring in proportional representation by single transferrable vote in all elections.
