Adrenaline-pumping rock and bluesy belters

Yet another weekend when music loving, adventurous promoters, took the risk and put on music festivals - one in the hills at Llanfyrnach and one by the seaside at Pendine. Both had spectacular views and each offered nine bands from noon onwards. The weather affected attendance at both venues, but the shows went on.

Up to the Pembrokeshire hills for the first west Wales rock and blues festival. Here was everything you would expect from a well-organised event of this type, including the welcome sight of endless toilets and a crisp sound system. The nine acts were mainly local Pembrokeshire bands playing rock - Mattoidz and Feedbak, to blues - Purple Onion Company.

Back down to the beach and the sun (ish), surf, sand and speed of the Pendine Music Festival. The mainly young bands sounded fast and furious, in contrast to a now stationary and silent Babs. Many of the nine bands here had been shipped from the environs of Llanelli and Carmarthen (e.g. Blewin, Buddha Belly and Nikolai) to feed us full throttle, high velocity, adrenaline-pumping rock.

In contrast Andy, the organiser, dusted down his mates and delivered us some bluesy belters in the shape of Chocolate Starfish, before giving way to local faces in a scratch band, appropriately called Itchy and Scratchy, to be followed by the ever-scorching Skeptic John.

And if these two gigs weren't exciting enough, there were always the Cheeky Girls, rumoured to be singing their complete back catalogue (three songs???) somewhere in the county.
