Sheeptacular is shear delight

Glorious sunshine welcomed visitors and competitors to a fun day-out at Fronhaul Fields, Fishguard, for the town's 146th annual agricultural show on Friday.

Young and old alike were entertained throughout the day with displays of horse-shoeing, falconry and sheep-shearing as well as the sight of some of the finest looking animals in the county.

The organisers were also pleased to welcome the Great Welsh Sheep Show's Sheeptacular, where 20 breeds of everyone's favourite woolly friends strutted their stuff on stage and showed off their good looks.

The show did hit a slight stutter mid-afternoon, when Sidney, an impressive looking Harris hawk, decided he was far more interested in a murder of crows resting in nearby fields than the food on offer in his handler's grasp and disappeared for the rest of the day's events. However, the sight of 40 or so of the black scavengers wheeling and swooping in obvious panic was enough to reassure both trainer and spectators that Sidney would return when he had had his fun.

More serious moments came when organisers, North Pembrokeshire Farmer's Club, honoured their own with a number of long-service awards including Valerie Edwards, receptionist at Gwaun Valley Vet's surgery, and its predecessor, for 46 years.
