Climber dies as rescue services experience busy weekend

A climber was killed when he fell 120 feet on to rocks at St Govans Head on Saturday afternoon. The accident was the most serious incident for the emergency services on what proved to be one of the busiest weekends along the county's coastline this year.

A paramedic was winched down the cliff-face to assist 39-year-old Marvin Royce, from Chelmsford, Essex, who had sustained serious injuries during the fall at 12.25pm.

Mr Royce, a member of a London-based mountaineering club on a weekend climbing trip to the county, was airlifted to Withybush Hospital by helicopter but was pronounced dead on arrival. The Pembrokeshire coroner has been informed.

Elsewhere in the county, Broad Haven's cliff rescue team were called into action after a father and son became trapped by rising tides in a cave 50 feet up the cliff face on the north side of Little Haven.

The youngster had climbed into Smuggler's Cave at 5.20pm and became stuck. His father climbed the cliff after him but could not get back down either.

Over 500 spectators watched as rescuers scaled the cliffs down to Leighton Davies, from Morriston, and 12-year-old son Connor. The pair were then lowered down the rockface to the safety of a waiting inshore lifeboat.

Meanwhile, St Davids lifeboat crew was called out when a 54-year-old Watford woman injured her lower back aboard the pleasure craft Viking Challenger two miles off Grassholm Island at on Sunday. The woman was taken to St Justinian's lifeboat station where she was treated by Dr Sara Hamilton before being transferred by ambulance to Withybush Hospital. The remaining nine passengers on the vessel were treated by Dr Hamilton for cold and exhaustion. A coastguard spokesman said there had been over 25 call-outs over what was a very busy weekend.
