Sun shines on carnival

After a week of heavy rain, carnival day, dawned bright and clear at the township of Laugharne, it was a day of glorious sunshine and festivity.

This was one of the best carnivals, with a record number of 16 floats, and numerous competitors. The judges were the Portreeve and Portreeve's Lady, Alderman Colin Webb and Mrs Helene James; the Mayor and Mayoress, Councillor and Mrs K. Brown; and Mr and Mrs David Thomas, of Bancyfelin. The queens and prince charming were crowned. The master of ceremonies was George Reid, the new landlord of the Corporation Arms.

The results were: Best character girl or boy (pre-school), Angle, Casey Blewett; best character boy (under seven): Harry Potter (black), Rhys Thomas; best character girl (under seven), Sour Grapes: Molly Pearce; best character boy (seven - ten): Future Rugby Star, Lee Darbyshire; best character girl (seven - ten): clown, Martina Howells; best character boy (ten - 16): Vicar of Dibley, Rhys Thomas; best character girl (ten - 16): Count on Me, Rachel Thomas; Best character lady (over 16): Clown Behaving Badly, Kitty John; best character gent (over 16): Saddam, Michael John; historical character lady or gent: Dylan Thomas, Alison Lewis; best advertisement: BMI Baby, Eiddwen John; most humorous couple (silver cup): Old Couple 1953, Chris Hastings and Paul John; best group (silver cup): Charleston Girls, Amanda Mitchell; best float (Cato Street Conspiracy cup): Dylan's Shed, Alison Lewis; children's float (silver cup): Cyril's Rainbow, Ant's Hill; Queen's float (silver cup): Fairy Queen Float, Rebecca Flanagan.
