Pembroke Show Dance, regarded as South Pembrokeshire YFC's biggest annual fundraiser, has been abandoned because stringent licensing rules would land the club with a £2,000 bill.
For 30 years the dance following Pembroke Show has boosted this club's income and provided a rare opportunity for town to meet country.
But organisers said they reached the difficult decision of scrapping the event which would have followed Pembroke Show on Wednesday because Pembrokeshire County Council's public entertainment licensing requirements had become a financial burden.
Speaking at the show, dairy farmer, Roger Lewis, a former Pembrokeshire YFC county chairman, said it would leave a worrying hole in South Pembrokeshire YFC's finances. "At one time we would get around 800 people at the show dance, it was our single most important source of income," said Mr Lewis, of Poyerston Farm, Milton.
"This year the licence would have cost us £400 before we had even started looking at the cost of providing one bouncer for every 100 people and toilet facilities separate from those in place at the show. It would just have been too expensive."
Instead, the club and show Committee enjoyed a barbecue for invited guests to mark the end of what had been a hugely successful day. Funding sourced by PLANED had paid for a major pre-show advertising push and the results were evident with visitor numbers up by 20%.
There were good entries in all sections but it was the equine classes which proved to be the biggest draw with competitors up by 50%. Show chairman Charles Clewett said the advertising campaign in the run-up to the show had been crucial. "We have been rebuilding the show after foot-and-mouth and have brought in some changes such as changing the horse classes to appeal to younger riders," said the Tenby accountant.
