On course for classic record

WITH a record number of entries from all over the UK and a mass of bookings for accommodation all over the county, this year's Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Run from Milford Haven to Tenby on Sunday could, weather permitting, break all records. The cars and motorcycles taking part range from models from the early 1920s to a selection of new Minis - some of which were registered this year.

This is rather fitting as a new version of the 1969 classic 'The Italian Job' goes on release in September complete with its main stars - several new Mini Coopers. However, perhaps the stars of the run will be two military vehicles and their crews from 14 Signal Regiment, Cawdor Barracks, Brawdy.

The crews and their vehicles will be in desert colours having just returned from a tour of duty in Iraq. The crews are looking forward to their relaxing run around the county.

The guests this year will be the mayor of Milford Haven; the chairman of Pembrokeshire County Council; Tamsin Dunwoody Kneafsey, AM for Preseli Pembrokeshire, and the president of the Rotary Club of Tenby, who will once again host the event in Tenby - where it is hoped the Mayor of Tenby will greet everyone.

The event will be opened in Milford by the Milford town crier David Rye at 10 am and the run will commence at 10.30 am by the lowering of the Pembrokeshire flag by Fiona Phillips, editor of the Western Telegraph.

After a refreshment stop at St David's RFC, courtesy of the St David's Peninsula Tourism Association with a greeting from the Mayor of St Davids, vehicles will follow the North Pembrokeshire coastline before heading inland at Eglwyswrw and then south on the A478 for Tenby, where they will be met by members of Tenby Rotary and the town's mayor. Crews will once again receive light refreshments, courtesy of Matt and Ruth Goldwait, of the Pam Pam Restaurant, and served by Tenby Inner Wheel.

The presentation of Western Telegraph certificates will commence at 3.15 pm. Vehicles will receive a Western Telegraph 'Monte Carlo' style rally board at Milford Marina. Participants can enter up to and on the day. But only those who entered by last Saturday were guaranteed a rally board.
