Public should know dangers of LNG transportation

DEAR EDITOR, - We understand if the Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) terminal at Milford Haven is approved, that tankers containing 250,000 cubic metres of LNG (117,000 metric tonnes of cargo), containing sufficient energy equivalent to a small nuclear device, will be berthed.

This cargo is carried at a temperature of -259oF, so has to be constantly refrigerated to keep it stable. The tankers will also be much higher out of the water than oil tankers, and therefore more susceptible to wind.

In view of the Sea Empress disaster, should not the public be fully informed of the safety concerns surrounding the importation of this extremely hazardous cargo, by means of a public inquiry? After all, if a high explosives factory was planned on the same site, there would be a public outcry over safety concerns. We would suggest that LNG is considerably less stable than high explosives.
