Champions end season on winning note

CRICKET Carew (175 for 6) beat Narberth (131 all out) Umpires: Trefor Evans and John Williams Scorer: Idwal Vincent

Carew ended a wonderful season on a winning note as they accounted for Narberth by 44 runs to take a measure of revenge for a rare defeat by the opposition in the Duggie Morris Cup.

After being asked to bat first, Carew had an opening stand of 49 by Nick Scourfield and Ian Sefton which was boosted by other cameos from Steve Cole and skipper Darren Thomas - and then Thomas completed a memorable season as captain with another four wickets to confirm his right to be considered favourably alongside some other fine skippers at the club.

Sefton had five fours in his 26 before he was caught at backward point by Nick Evans off Greg Morris, while Scourfield anchored the innings as well as ever with seven boundaries in his 46.

There were two wickets apiece for Evans and Wayne Howells but Cole (36) helped Carew move sensibly along before Thomas hit an unbeaten 22 alongside Barry Ansell (10), ensuring that Narberth had a total to challenge them.

Thomas then removed Daniel Hughes, James Devonald, Mike Scale and Howells in a 4 for 26 spell which really put the skids under the Narberth reply. They lurched to 76 for 6 as John Canton and Rob Scourfield bowled well but then Ceri Jones showed what a destructive hitter he can be as he smashed four big sixes on his way to a lightning-quick 42 before Canton had him well caught by Nick Scourfield at long-off to round off a 3-30 analysis by the off-spinner.

Matthew Phillips applied the coup de grace with two late wickets that completed a successful season for The Villagers - but Narberth could also look back on a good first season back in the top section under the guidance of skipper Ian Hughes.
