Equine illness warning

Tests have been carried out on four horses in Pembrokeshire suspected of having a highly contagious and potentially fatal illness.

Strangles, a condition which causes severe coughing and swollen lymph glands, is understood to be rife across Britain. At least four horses stabled in Pembrokeshire have displayed symptoms but the results of tests are not yet known.

Fear of the rapid spread of this condition has had an impact on local riding events, where entries have been down. Strangles is spread in horse mucus, therefore close contact with horses displaying symptoms, including a thick nasal discharge, must be avoided.

It can be fatal in foals whose immune systems have not fully developed but the likelihood of losing a mature horse is remote. The Haverfordwest-based Fenton Veterinary Group recently called a meeting to discuss precautions with some of its clients.

Partner Richard Davies stressed it was not a problem specific to Pembrokeshire. Cases had been reported across the UK. "At the moment it seems to be under control,'' he said. "People shouldn't panic but should be aware of what symptoms to look out for. If they suspect their horse may have strangles they should contact their vet.''

As strangles is bacterial and not viral it can only be spread by direct contact with infected mucus. The condition is so called because swelling around the throat area in young horses can make it difficult for them to swallow.

Horses with the condition are rarely treated because this can suppress rather than cure the symptoms. Owners should monitor the horse's food and liquid intake until it recovers. Although the outbreak has not forced the cancellation of any shows, organisers have been closely observing horses as they arrive at events.
