Borderers slam sorry Tondu

Whitland 78 Tondu 0

Whitland opened their new season with a runaway win over a very weak Tondu outfit which was already 40 points adrift at the interval - and was never able to come to terms with the power up front of the Borderers' side, or the pace behind the scrum.

Indeed, such was the difficulties at Tondu that at one stage it seemed uncertain whether they would muster enough players and Whitland's new coach Domenico Setaro will make sure that his side keep their feet firmly on the ground since there are sure to be tougher tasks ahead than this one - although it did allow the Borderers to try out moves on a day made for running rugby at Parc Llwyn Ty Gwyn.

It took Whitland exactly seven minutes to open their account when full back Gavin Morris marked his return from Cardigan with a neat grubber kick and regather that led to his claiming a try which fly half Scott Penney goaled.

Winger Mark Lloyd almost added a second try but the floodgates began to open when No 8 Randal Williams ploughed over for an unconverted try and centre Mike Buckingham added No 3 which Penney converted.

Penney added a try and conversion after good work by Steve Gerrard, Johnny Kaloi and Lee Glanville - and Kaloi was again involved with replacement flanker John Bowen before centre Steve Griffiths raced through to the posts for Penney to again add the extra points.

Bowen and Kaloi were also the catalysts of the half's sixth try which was claimed by scrum half Andrew Jenkins and converted by Penney before the fly half gave Aled Davies a chance to show his skills in the fly half berth straight after the interval.

Tondu tried manfully to stem the tide but Gavin Morris again opened the scoring for the period and Aled Davies converted as he did when lock Carwyn Davies marked his leaguer debut with a deserved try. Mark Lloyd crossed soon afterwards and winger Lloyd grabbed his second score before Carwyn Davies registered a second try for the overworked scoreboard.

Steve Griffiths rounded off the try scoring and Aled Davies converted to give him a second half total of eight points from his trusty right boot - and referee Matthew Aplin brought matters to a slightly early close to save punch-drunk Tondu any further punishment from the eager Borderers.
