Summer of success

Llanboidy Cheesemak-ers, renowned for their award-winning cheeses, had a series of successes last month.

Their Cilowen Organic Farmhouse Cheese was rated by the Independent newspaper as one of the ten best British cheeses.

This follows their significant achievements at the Royal Welsh Show, winning four awards and their Cilowen Organic Farm-house Cheese being very highly commended at the Nantwich International Cheese Show out of a class of 21 organic cheeses Cilowen has achieved a remarkable number of awards in the two years since its debut. It won best organic cheese and gold medal at the British Cheese Awards in 2001; in 2002 it won best Welsh cheese and another gold medal. It shared Soil Association's best organic cheese award and a silver award in the Welsh Food and Drink Awards, 2002.

Two new organic cheeses are joining Cilowen shortly: Cilowen with leeks, which add a subtle flavour of sweetness and onion, and Cilowen Smoked, a subtle cheese smoked over whole logs.

Llanboidy Cheesemakers is a small family business which produces traditional hand-made cheeses.

Sue Jones, of Llanboidy Cheesemakers, believed strongly in the importance of preserving their Welsh identity and developing local partnerships, and so struck an agreement with Calon Wen, a Welsh farmer-owned organic milk co-operative, to supply milk for the Cilowen Organic Cheese.
