Lion's shade is a roaring success

Dear Editor, - I have been so delighted to see the recent renovation of the Lion Hotel in Pembroke. The building occupies a prominent site as you enter the town over the Mill Pond and I think the new colours really enhance the beautiful structure and proportions of its striking achitectural features. I do not understand why it has been singled out for criticism and a possible £20,000 fine, as there must be many grade two listed buildings in the town painted in a variety of bright colours. If this particular shade of plum is considered not to be 'historically correct', why doesn't the council make it clear in advance what colours, apart from magnolia, are acceptable and apply the rules to everyone? Pat Thomas Ceann Mara, Freshwater East.

Dear Editor, - It seems that if you neglect your listed building so it becomes unsafe the council will leave you alone. If you maintain it but use the wrong shade of paint they will be on you like a ton of bricks. Paint is temporary but it does help to protect the fabric of the building. I would prefer my council tax to be spent helping property owners keeping their buildings safe and in good condition so future generations can see them - whatever the colour. Dear Editor, - I would like to put my opinion on paper regarding The Lion Hotel and its colour transformation which is a bone of contention with Cadw. For goodness' sake, the colour chosen is a Heritage colour and driving across the Mill Bridge towards The Lion Hotel is now a pleasure. Before the hotel was painted, entry to Pembroke was shabby, now, it is a pleasure to look at it and to drive past. Surely the matter is personal where the colour choice is concerned and in my opinion it looks great. JEAN SPURR Cozy Nook, 35 Holyland Drive, Pembroke.
