Inefficient power stations

Dear Editor, -I am amazed by your recent headline Power Station In The Pipeline. Thereis almost overwhelming consensus that carbon dioxide emissions from burning fossil fuelsare responsible for global warming which, ifunchecked, posesa real threat to continuation of human life on earth.Carbon dioxide levels are now at their highest for at least 420,000 years.

I canaccept the argument thatthe UK needs gas in the short to medium term to keep our central heating systems working. However, to burn gas imported from half-wayround the world in a UK gas power station operating at 45% efficiency should be illegal under international law. ManyEuropean power stations operate at 80% efficiency by pumpingwaste heat through underground pipes to households and businesses.

Gas should only be used in these environmentally responsible ways rather than less efficient power stations whose main aim is to maximise profitsfor multinational corporations, while the rest of us pay the price of CO2 pollution and climate change.
