First lady president makes show history

The first lady president in the 220-year history of the Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society took office at Wednesday's agm.

Shirley Johns, an administrative officer and personal assistant to the chief officers at Dyfed-Powys Divisional Police HQ at Haverfordwest, made show history when she took the reins from retiring president, Mathry farmer John Evans.

Mrs Johns has been a showgoer since she was a child, having ridden ponies from an early age. A steward in the pony classes since the society's bi-centenary year in 1984, she became chief steward in the in-hand, palomino, Arab and children's riding sections when she took over from Gerald Price in 1998.

Husband Rob is also on the civilian staff at the police station. "I am very proud to have been elected as first lady president to the biggest County Show in Wales," said Mrs Johns.

Paying tribute to the outgoing president, she added: "I am sure that by all working together we will enable the society to go from strength to strength and ensure its future here at Withybush for many years to come."
