Sell-out show 'simply sublime'

HOW could I possibly write a fair review of what is, in my opinion, the greatest musical ever written? And not only that, it's performed by a school where I once, not so long ago, wandered the hallowed hallways?

The answer: easy! Tasker Milward's sell-out run of the multi-award-winning Les Miserables was, quite simply, sublime.

From the very first note I was staggered by the precocious talent and unwavering dedication that resonated throughout the entire cast.

I couldn't help but marvel as they oozed enthusiasm and revelled in Alain Boubil and Claude-Michel Schnberg's challenging musical, which was finely complemented by a stellar orchestra, commanded by musical director Paul Williams.

The fabulous troupe, which at times belied their age, was led by the gallant Sam Orr, who executed the demanding role of Jean Valjean with consummate ease.

He was ably supported by a worthy performance from Rhodri Lawrence as Javert, the gutsy Mathew Jones as warlike hero Enjolras and romantic protagonist Marius, played by the wonderful Sam Morris.

The three leading ladies, Lloyda Henton and Sarah Dullaghan, who played the tragic figures of Fantine and Eponine, and Kirsty Harris as the innocent Cosette, performed throughout with enviable aplomb.

And we must not forget the masterful, and at times show-stealing performance of the raucous Monsieur and Madame Thenardier, played by the excellent Aaron Kirkhouse and Sally Morris.

They were all strongly supported by Ian Harvey as Gavroche, Rebecca Phillips as little Cosette, Owain Mason as Fauchelevant and the entire cast.

I cannot praise this performance enough, and my hat goes off to directors Chris Prosser and Luise Thomas, who were brave enough and confident enough to put on, quite possibly, Tasker Milward's greatest ever performance.
