Pembrokeshire could see a return to the anti-GM demonstrations of 2001, as frustration mounts on what activists regard as a weakening by Welsh law makers over the commercial growing of genetically altered crops.
Campaigners who fought to stop trial crops of forage maize being planted at Mathry, are worried about the National Assembly Government's apparent growing support for plans to include a genetically modified maize variety on the National Seeds Register. This, fears Pembrokeshire campaigner, Dr Brian John, would effectively open the door to full commercialisation.
His concern follows comments made by Carwyn Jones, minister for environment, planning and countryside, at the National Assembly.
Although Mr Jones announced 'no change' in the Assembly Government's policy of maximum restrictions under the present rules, Dr John said it was apparent from his words that he was under 'immense pressure' from Westminster not to block an attempt to list Chardon LL fodder maize on the National Seeds Register.
Dr John, chairman of the campaign group, GM Free Cymru, said he was disappointed that Mr Jones had not given an unequivocal assurance that the Assembly would block the listing.
"Mr Jones is obviously concerned that a listing veto would be challenged by ACRE (Advisory Committee on Releases into the Environment) and other advisory committees on scientific grounds,'' said Dr John.
His concern was shared by Letterston organic farmer, Gerald Miles, who recently drove to London on a tractor to protest against the planting of GM crops.
Local MP Jackie Lawrence, who wants to retain Wales as a GM free zone, will be taking the views of the people of Pembrokeshire to the House of Commons. o To record your view fill in the form.
