Stop GM madness

Dear Editor, - The GM debate proved an overwhelming majority of people were against the commercialisation of GM crops in this country. Yet permission to grow a type of GM maize has been granted under certain conditions.

Eric Morley (DEFRA) infers, in a letter to me, that GM ingredients in our food are inevitable and the EU is pushing for 0.9% tolerance unlabelled. The Soil Association is campaigning for 0.1%.

The Food Standards Agency has said there is no danger from GM food. Have they really looked for evidence?

At a time when the Government has realised that to keep people healthy is cheaper than treating disease, and is campaigning for healthier lifestyles, to introduce an unnecessary risk like GM is illogical.

But in the end it's up to us, the people. We can insist on honest and clear labeling and refuse GM food. No farmer is compelled to plant GM and surely not many farmers would like to risk spoiling his neighbour's crops and livelihood?

The biotech companies are entirely commercial. They are too big and too powerful and they don't care too much about feeding the Third World!
